Interesting Links

This section will provide links to websites you might find either useful in this course (or some other course) or simply interesting on its own merit.  Most of these sites provide "3-D" views of molecules using a plug-in called Chime that can be downloaded for free.  After installing the plug-in if the molecule was created using Chime, if you right-click on it, a menu will come up that will allow you make it rotate or stop rotation (once rotation stops you can rotate the molecule manually by putting the cursor over the molecule, left-clicking and dragging), change the view to ball & stick, bars, space filling, as well as other features.  I'm told that you may have trouble installing it into Netscape 7 and Internet Explorer 6, but earlier versions of these browsers work well.

The University of Bristol's Molecule of the Month - This site has links to information about more than 60 different molecules.  Many are medicinal (e.g. Relenza, tetracycline, ibuprofen), some in the news (e.g. VX gas, Agent Orange, nicotine), and others just part of the everyday world (e.g. chlorophyll, frankincense).  If you go to this page you will find 3 columns.  To go to a link about the molecule you are interested in, you need to click on one of the links in the molecule column.  Many of the pages are quite elaborate and will give you 3-dimensional views of the molecules with the appropriate plug-in.  In many cases, much of the text has little chemistry and is devoted to uses of the molecule.

VCU's MedChem Molecules - Similar to the Molecule of the Month but with fewer (but different) examples.

Oxford University's Chemicals with Pharmaceutical Activity - This site has over 400 molecules, but only provides the 3-D structures of the molecules.

Florida State's Fire and Spice - A site that discusses about half a dozen molecules that are the principle flavorants in spices.
