Ohio River Metagenome

Determining the metabolic processes performed by microbes is important for understanding and manipulating ecosystems.  It is difficult to describe microbial function due to our inability to culture most microbes.  Metagenomic approaches allow the analysis of microbial communities by allowing us to see the presence or absence of genes that control the metabolic processes that are important for growth and survival in a given environment.
